New China Turns 60
Great short piece from the NYT on the 60th anniversary celebration taking place in Mainland today, centered in Beijing.
The milestone is receiving a much more subdued reception in Hong Kong; in the words of one HK native I met this morning, it is just another "regulation holiday" for Hong Kong residents, a chance to stay home from work or school. There will, of course, be a big fireworks display tonight over the Harbor (incidentally, this is also the three-year anniversary of the day I took the LSAT in Hong Kong, and therefore a very personal milestone - the day my current adventure began, in a way). I have convinced a local friend to come with me to jostle with the crowds for a good view of the show. Longtime HK residents are rather blase about fireworks, apparently, but I haven't lost my love for them yet. If I get any good photos, I'll be sure to upload them here later.
