En Route, Back-Dated
Me and my 747
Outbound
From San Francisco, where I couldn't get online but nonetheless jotted down the following:
Even the airport (which is quite nice, as they go, though they lack a discernible wireless network) has an element of nostalgia inherent in it; this is where I first departed for China in July 2005. There are Asian faces everywhere, most volubly a group of Japanese high school students at the gate adjacent to mine. One thought keeps running through my head: I can’t believe I am actually doing this. But I am.
I feel as if the law school chapter of my life has vanished. The adventure I am now embarking on seems entirely disconnected from the rigorous law school routine, though I imagine (and hope) that this feeling will change once classes begin next week. I have changed money, coerced the United Airlines Red Carpet Club staff to mail my last US-stamped mail (no mailboxes at the airport?!), and am debating whether or not to indulge in some San Francisco chocolate, coffee, or sourdough. Even in its most cliché forms, San Francisco is a town that I am certain would warm my epicurean heart. Maybe I should stay here for a while. Too bad I didn’t sketch out a longer layover in my itinerary—a day, a week, two weeks.
My nerves are jumping again.
Maybe I should get some coffee. And some chocolate.
